The Pennsylvania Dutch are a distinct cultural group predominantly of German descent residing in eastern and central Pennsylvania, USA. They live in close-knit rural communities and embrace a traditional way of life, revolving around farming, craftsmanship, and the preservation of their German dialect. The Pennsylvania Dutch Association was created with the purpose of preserving and celebrating this group's rich cultural heritage. They had the initiative to create a cookbook containing the most common dishes that have been passed from generation to generation. The book's goal isn't only to celebrate the Pennsylvania Dutch culture and cooking, but additionally to invite other people, especially Americans, to get to know this interesting and unusual group and their traditions.
Having in mind the potential of bringing this cookbook to millions of homes in the USA, the design take was to create a bridge between the Pennsylvania Dutch and modern U.S. people. The typographic choice recalls traditional typewriter characters that, at the time, were made manually – connecting with the Pennsylvania Dutch's value of craftsmanship. The vintage color pairings created for each chapter are inspired by U.S. interior house palettes from the 70s, creating an affective memory for the Americans.
While the typographic and color palette choices relate to the American world, the illustrated elements are all inspired by the Pennsylvania Dutch's universe, such as hex signs, traditional clothing, and their very own dishes. A mix of modern, simple figures with rough, handmade textures gave birth to a unique illustration style that, together with plenty of recipes, brings to the table of many Americans a taste of the cherished traditional Pennsylvania Dutch culture.
